About
Flagstone, where things are done differently
There’s just something about a winery that’s situated in a decommissioned dynamite factory. When you visit it for the first time, you’ll realise there’s something very special and creative about this place.
Gerhard Swart - Helderberg local, avid surfer and winemaker - sums up the Flagstone winemaking philosophy “We don’t have vineyards, but instead search for unique pockets of grapes on various farms. Our quest for superior quality and individuality means that I’m closely involved with grape producers and therefore spend a lot of time in the vineyards. I travel to vineyards as far south as Elim and even as far north to the Waaihoek Mountains close to Wolseley.”
Flagstone is situated in Paardevlei, which is a stone’s throw from the ocean and has breath taking mountain views. Nearby you’ll find the Cheetah Outreach facility and Triggerfish Brewery, adding to the allure of the place. Despite these exotic neighbours, Flagstone shines by over delivering on quality of wine. Prices range from R27 to R850 per bottle, making the Flagstone offering even more appealing. Mudhouse Sauvignon Blanc, Hardy’s Riesling and Da Luca Pinot Grigio are some of the international offerings.
Bling includes the ABSA Top 10 Pinotage and Platinum in the Michelangelo Awards for their Writer’s Block Pinotage (2013 and 2014). They also got the Veritas award for best producer with less than 10 entries three years in a row. Their 2016 Treaty Tree Sauvignon blanc/Semillon earned Double Gold at the Veritas awards.
Indeed, Flagstone has liquid gold.
